Needed another render of the 3com network card I did ages ago, this time
with focal blur, 2 area lights and a touch of rad. tweaked the scene
slightly and altered a lot of the settings for 3.5 (old was done with MP)

damn thing ate up over 200MB of ram and took 5 hours to render, weird thing
being the ram usage without rad, or without focal blur was only around 50MB,
and the render time was typically under 15minutes for either. yet putting
the 2 together and it nearly choked.

Holy crap! If you had better focal blur (and maybe slightly less of it)
this would be photorealistic...

I have to say that this is a very impressive image. I have some questions
about your dust and damage algorithms. Source code would be very nice for them.
Her are the areas that impress me most about the image.
Note area A where there is apparently a small fiber on the card. This is a
realistic detail that I have observed on many cards, and might be a tiny strand
of wire or a bit of lint fiber off something. Did you model it as an image map,
a sphere sweep, or a spline?
In area B I see some small particles of dust. Nice random placement. Once
again, is this a macro that puts the dust on it or is it an image map?
In area C there is static attached dust as many ICs (having epoxy cases)
tend to attract. Extremely well modeled and placed. It's of course the small
things that count in making an image photorealistic, and the first indication
that something is CG is often the absolute lack (or artificial appearance of)
real world markings and dirt. Your dirty algorithms are like the icing on the
cake and would be worth seeing the source code for.
In area D you have included a very realistic marking that would be produced
by using a tool to pry an integrated circuit out of its socket. Is this a
surface map that alters the normal of the plastic socket or did you actually
model the dents into the socket itself?
Waiting for your replies, as I am sure to learn something from your
technique.

Cheers!

the IC-Socket loocks too realistic. I can't believe someone can take so much

I subscribe to the view of Theo. As long as I have not seen the source code
or a modification of the image (pov-logo or name) I am not going to believe
in a POV-Ray rendered image. It is too perfect (dust, usage marks).

Could you please post a version without focal blur and radiosity?

Thanks,
Rene

Then try to see if you can spot
any solder on the pads, that

Well, I believe it's a render. I think Rick has used a (highly detailed) photo of the
board as
an image_map pigment (and possibly height_field), thus accounting for all the little
imperfections. Am I correct Rick?

Anyhow, extremely well done on this.

All the best,

I hate to tell you this, but IIRC from the first time this was posted,
pretty much all of thos details are due to the image map he used, I think
he scanned the card and used that as a basis to place components.

I could be wrong though and if I am, then I'm seriously impressed. :)

Use a flatbed scanner for textures when you can, and if you want dust &

The focal blur is a little more extreme for several reasons

1. artistic licence
2. I hadnt modelled some of the detail at the top of the card, but with
focal blur you dont see it.
3. the rad settings used were extremly low quality (count of 5) because I
needed to keep memory usage to a bare minimum - i only have 256mb on my PC
and better rad would have pushed it over the 200mb this image sucked. the
focal blur helps cover up the rad defects (like the shadow under the card)

Have you tried the trick of loading rad from a low res/simple geom.
version of the scene? It works pretty well and saves a lot of memory...

Nice, but the same old network card? When do you make a motherboard? ;-)

You should try 'always_sample off', you possibly need to take the pretrace
at a larger size (and save the radiosity data there) but it should avoid
the additional samples being taken because of the many focal blur rays.

Its not so much the rad settings on their own that caused the problem, its
using rad & focal blur in combination that seemed to stuff the ram
requirements through the roof

I needed another render of the card, and was so impressed with the final
result I just had to share :)

I may do a MB (etc) as these dont take more than an afternoon to model,
however I dont have anything spare at the moment :)

Yes, Christoph pointed it out in other reply. Now I understand why the
loading rad data works so fast: because I use "always_sample off". Well,
actually it also helps using a very small image for the saving-rad scene
(about 30% of the final render).

You may also have problems finding a motherboard you can fit on your

I'd already said this earlier, so it's my mouth that blabbered ;-)

A true THOMAS -Network - Card !

Maybe it will not often make connections to other network-cards cause it
can't believe their data :-).

However, this is the most realistic looking POV-Rendering (together with
Jaimes Apples)
I've ever seen.
Maybe there is something artificial even missing .... to contrast a normal
photography.

Will have to try that next time round

I think the reason it looks so real is the simple subject matter (as you see
from the model, there isnt really much to it) and the texture, lighting &
focal blur which in this instance make the scene work.

After doing this the first time round I pretty much decided that where ever
possable (for 'real world' objects) I would use 'real world' texture maps
and a flat bed scanner seems the best tool for getting them where ever
possable.

Oh, and focal blur hides a multitude of sins, really brings new meaning to
the term 'if you wont see it, dont model it!' well worth the increased
render time.

On a final note, I wouldn't have fancied doing this without Moray, without
which positioning all those little blocks for the mounted components would
have taken significantly longer.

Odd... I wouldn't have fancied doing it _with_ Moray, with which
positioning all those little block for the mounted components would have
taken _me_ significantly longer.

Place the texture as a viewpoint bg image, and copy paste little blocks into
place, it took 2 mins to position all the surface mounted components
perfectly.

AH! Well, I don't use Moray, so wouldn't have thought have doing that
and would've spent days trying to get everything into the right place...
Though I'd have done something similar if I'd have done it by hand -
load the image into an image editor and jot down the position and size, in
pixels, of each component and then would probably have created the card
object in POV so that one pov-unit was equal to on pixel on the image...

Very nice indeed, I remember when I saw you first image months ago a I
wanted to do one similar of the card I have been developing at work, but I
never came round doing it. Good stuff!
