I had no idea that this was so!  When I start putting together a scene,
I always start with the light source in an above left position.  Now, I'm wondering
if I'm doing it subconsciously, having scene so many paintings lit in
this way ...

That's correct but I have always painted, drawn and rendered with the light from the
right!

Excelent job so far, apart from the things that you want to improve (which I 
would have mentioned if you hadn't), the light looks a bit too blue, and 
sould maybe have a touch of yellow.  

The brass texture on the scales is beautifully done, particularly the 
dust/fingerprint effects.
