I pulled out the old SUDS program and generated an image by replacing the
spheres with julia fractals. The rendered image has odd gray rectangles. Is
this related to bounding boxes? How can I get rid of them.

    "Who knows" is all I can say about the grey boxes, but if those julias
were filled with media they would make impressive fog rising off the
water...

Maybe you shold see if you can find what is causing the problem and report
the bug in povray.beta-test.
