No media, no layered planes, 3.1/3.5 compatible, fully animateable,
automatic sun-shading, parameters for lighting, softness, smoothness,
height, flatness, turbulence - and very quick to render!

The Holy Grail of clouds...how? What are the drawbacks? What types of
clouds can it do?
I think some of the media clouds look more realistic, but only at
settings that cause very slow rendering...and I've noticed clouds in
reality don't look very realistic, either. ;-)
The fog definitely looks wrong, is it hiding some distance artifacts?

Not media...but they look very 3D, they appear to cover up clouds behind
them. Not isosurfaces, they don't fit the part about being 3.1
compatible or being fast. Sprites? In other words, a bunch of partly
transparent objects scattered around the sky? That would get pretty
slow, probably almost at the level of layered planes. You have me
stumped.

Nice. Pseudo-randomly generated meshes, perhaps? When will your macro be available?

How will it work with things like, for instance, a ruddy sunset peeking

One question: Is it possible to make the outlines (at the top) slightly less

AWESOME ROLEX!

It's a photography... probably made with a numerical apparatus.
But it perfectly fit the description.

This looks interesting!

When saying fully animatable, does that include flying around the clouds?
Going from below them to above them? Flying through a cloud?

Is there also a parameter for density? The clouds look a bit heavy/solid for
my likings...

Anyway, I look forward to learn more about this.

Some people here are guessing it's a super-complex pigment, but that
doesn't jive with what I'm seeing here; a pigment like that probably
couldn't be written in 3.1, and in 3.5 it would take a long time to
calculate; plus, it still wouldn't create the effect seen here to put
one pigment on a plane/sphere, unless you used some kind of pretrace
step to generate an imagemap, which I doubt.

I'm guessing you've written an insanely complex mesh macro.

Whatever it is, it's impressive.

Very nice Chris. Some are saying that the clouds have sharp edges, I
would agree. The thing is, I've seen those sharp edges on clouds just
like that on a hot Summers day here in the UK, <rarely now, but true>,
maybe not so many of them together though...

I think that you're using the sky_sphere as the 'main' guilty party
in this image? But something puts me off that because there seems to be
a lot of uniformity at the base of the clouds.

     Perhaps two great ideas together?

I think you've cracked it with this, and if I'm not close, then this
is why I really like PoV.

Meshes seem to render much faster than other methods of making cloudlike shapes.

Would you believe that animation (scene file dated Aug 1999) uses a single
sphere for the clouds, with just a few discs for the sun? I'm still amazed
at how complex an apparently simple POV-Ray texture or two can look.
