Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, here it is, I know you've always wanted
a browser that incorporates POV-Ray in some form or other, for just 12
payments of $0.00, you can get this amazing...
Sorry.
I was just looking at a very good "tweaking" website I found recently, and I
saw something that would let you change the Internet Explorer logo that is
shown at the top-right of the window, you know, the spinning thingie? Save
the picture somewhere on your HD, then go to Start>Run> and type "regedit"
(w/o quotes). Double-click on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER", then "Microsoft",
"Internet Explorer", "Toolbar".
Right-click in the right pane of the window, select New>String Value and
name it "SmBrandBitmap" (again w/o quotes). Then, once you've entered the
name, double-click your "SmBrandBitmap" and, in the dialog box that appears,
type the path to whereever you've saved the file. Open IE, and voila!
there's your little pov logo.
Of course, for non-IE or -Windows users, this information is completely
useless, but oh well.

Comments? Questions? Criticism (most likely ;-)?

Thanks, I'll get this one into here (shows for Outlook too as I recall). I
did one of these myself a while back, except not of POV-Ray.
There's also a large size for those or something. I had done it before
installing Windows XP so I'll have to just try this out again to see if it
still works. I forget what the other stuff about it was for that larger
size or whatever that was all about.

Yes, this is fun. I replaced the IE logo some years ago by a PoV-rendered
rotating earth :-)

I used the model in "brilliant.inc" by Jerome Grimbert (posted here about a
year ago).

Rock22.bmp and Rock38.bmp are static images (yes, just plain black
rectangles).

Spin22.bmp and Spin38.bmp are the small and large "busy" animations.

Given the size of the images I don't see photons happening anytime soon, but
if somebody else posts a new and improved version I will be happy to give it
a try :-)

Enjoy.

In Win95 it was in logo.sys in the root of the boot drive. (e.g.
C:\logo.sys)
Might have changed in 98.

Strange. I am pretty sure that the filename is still logo.sys Most likely a
hidden file. Try dir /ah in the dos box in the root of your boot drive.

Additionally I remember something that Win98 is able to use some "backup" if
it fails to find logo.sys in the root. Have you tried to place your BMP
there, named logo.sys?

Nothing for logo.sys anywhere. I will try putting it in the C://Windows

Just for those who haven't taken this walk, two of the three "splash" or
logo files are in C://Windows and named "logow.sys" and "logos.sys". The
logow file is the "Windows is now shutting down..." file, and the logos file
is the "it is now safe to turn off your computer" file. That one is almost
never seen if your computer shuts itself down, so there is little joy in
changing it.
The format is simple- although they are "sys" files in extension, they
are in fact BMP images. The format is simple- width 320, height 400, stored
as 8 bit optimized color. The files will be 127K in size on the windows
directory listing, the actual sizes are 129,080 bytes each.
Create your artwork in POVray or whatever in a 640x400 format (which I
added to my quick render settings) and once done, resample it to 320x400.
That's pretty easy to do in most art programs, or you can actually set
POVray to do it, I am sure.
Once done, save in that 8 bit BMP format and copy to the proper
directory. Using the DOS prompt, rename the original "logow.sys" file to
something like "logow.bak" and leave it alone. Then rename your bitmap
image to "logow.sys" also in DOS to get the file extensions right.
Then, when you shut down your machine, you will see your little artwork
instead of the typical stuff.

Cheers!

Save your bmp as a 256-color image in C:\logo.sys. If it doesn't exist (as
you seem to be saying), save it as logo.sys anyway. Win98 has it hidden in
some DLL, but it's really much easier to have it take whatever's in logo.sys
than change what it has.

It worked on my Win98 (first release) when I messed with it at the time...

(and later removed the splashscreen altogether simply by putting a 0-byte
file called logo.sys in C:\ )

just make sure that you save the logo.sys to the root of your C:\ , and
not in the windows folder like the other splash screens...

might also try DTA229, although my current

I wrote a Visual Basic routine that would use this type of animation 'strip' as a
screen saver. It's been awhile, but I'll see if I
can hunt up the source (there is a simple example included with Visual Studio), if
anyone is interested.

Don't know if it's mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but the first frame
in the animation is used for the static image *only*, which means that the
first frame is skipped over when the animated sequence loops.

completely uninstall AOL. The Internet Explorer spinning logo had been
permanently replaced by AOL's "eye in the pyramid" logo. It just keeps
watching me. Somebody - make it stop!!!! AAAHHHHHH......

Now if I can just figure out how to stop "Outlook Express provided by
America Online" from appearing in OE's title bar. And how do you get AOL's
uninstall program to uninstall itself? Jeez, I hate AOL!

Are you sure? I had noticed that *some* frame seemed to be skipped, but I
couldn't figure out which one it was.. I'll go check.

If you really want to 'freak out' do a search of the registry for any occurence of
AOL.

Quite sure.

I also think there's a limitation of 50 frames or something like that, but I
haven't tested that.

Hmm, over here it seems that the first *four* images are skipped over after
the first time it goes around.

Are you sure it's the first *four* frames? If it's always the same number,
then it would be simple to compensate.

In fact I just looked it up on Google. The following is from
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/ie5.html :

=
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Window Title"="IE5"
"SmallBitmap"="c:\\windows\\desktop\\smallbitmap.bmp"
"BigBitmap"="c:\\windows\\desktop\\bigbitmap.bmp"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"BackBitmapIE5"="c:\\windows\\desktop\\toolbarbitmap.bmp"
;Line below commented out. Use instead of above line with IE4
;"BackBitmap"="c:\\windows\\desktop\\toolbarbitmap.bmp"
"SmBrandBitmap"="c:\\windows\\desktop\\smbitbrand.bmp"
"BrandBitmap"="c:\\windows\\desktop\\bitbrand.bmp"

BackBitmapIE5 can be any bitmap. The only requirement is that it is light in
colour so you can read the toolbar. Size is unimportant as it will be tiled
to fit. Try clouds.bmp from the Windows directory or make your own with
Paint on the Start Programs Accessories menu. I've supplied a streched and
cropped version (1280 (streched by 2) x 100 (streched by 2 then cropped to
100px) of clouds.bmp renamed to ToolbarBitmap.bmp.

SmallBitmap and SmBrandBitmap are used when the menu bar only or a toolbar
without text labels is the top toolbar. BigBitmap and BrandBitmap is used
when another bigger toolbar is the top toolbar.

SmallBitmap is a 22 x 22 pixel bitmap and BigBitmap is a 38 x 38 pixel
bitmap and are used when Internet Explorer isn't doing anything. I've
provided a red square with a black border of each bitmap as a template for
you to modify.

SmBrandBitmap (22 pixels wide) and BrandBitmap (38 pixels wide) are the
animated bitmaps. There height is dependant on the number of frames in the
bitmap, Height=No of frames x width, so 10 frames in SmBitmapBrand is 220
pixels and in BitmapBrand would be 380 pixels.

Each BrandBitmap is a series of either 22 x 22 or 38 x 38 bitmaps joined
together vertically. I've supplied a sample bitmap of 6 frames for each to
be used as a template for making your own. These are just coloured squares
with a black border.

The first 4 frames are played once when Internet Explorer begins to browse
and the remaining frames loop over until the browse operation is complete.
If SmallBitmap or BigBitmap are absent then the first frame of the branding
bitmap is used as the static branding.
