I used an IOR of -1 together with scattering media type 5 to create this fur
effect but I can't jugde if it is worth the rendering time compared to a fur
texture, so what do you think?

Looks like a very soft, fine, red fur. I want to run my fingers over it =)
The shading is realistic. Then again, I'm not sure if I'd know it was fur if
I wasn't told so. I think it's pretty good though.

Looks good!
What's the rendertime?

Yeah gee, tell how long it took at least. Not just "not sure worth the
time" :-)
Looks fuzzy anyway, even if not exactly fur-like. Nice idea.

That would make a perfect jewelry box. Can't tell without a pic, but this
may look better in a close up than other fur textures.

No, it renders quite fast and gives acceptable results even with the default
media settings but there is still a difference between a few seconds and a
few minutes.

Since the render time is only a few minutes, I believe that this method is
worth the time in some cases. Your fur has a distinct look from other fur
methods.
The only problem I can see is on the csg items. If you used union, then
merge would probably correct the problem. If you are using merge already,
then the method has a definite flaw.

Sorry, but I can't see the problem. Could you please point me to it.

On your rounded box and rounded cyl I can see the outine of the individual
CSG objects. Might just be an illusion or compression. I'm not sure. I
wonder if a superellipsoid would show the same effect.

I've used merge so I think a superellipsoid would give the same effect.

It really is more velvet than fur; you can tell straightaway.
Incidentally, that edging effect on the rounded objects I think occurs
in real life too. Should check that...
Excellent stuff!

Hey, I didn't even know what fur means. I just saw that all the others were
calling this fur and thought that it would be the right word but now where
I've looked it up I agree with you that it really looks more like velvet and
not fur.

Looks great either as short haired fur or velvet.
I would never have thought of using a negative IOR.
To quote Vroomfondel on this: 'I think our brains must be
to highly trained, Majikthise'
But if the POV developers allows fysically impossible
values, who am I to complain.

If I were you, I'd market your texture as -the- definitive velvet of Povray.
This is really a great texture!

It doesn't look like fur as such, but it's still exelent. It's more like
velvet.

If the rendering time is not above 5 minutes, I'd accept it.. Looks good,
but media is said to be too slow.

Hmm, very different method, but very similiar to Rune's "fur" texture. His looks
like velvet too...

I don't know a link to any info, but I remember reading about some highly
ionised gas, plasma, or similar, etc that had a negative index of
refraction. I'll look into it. As another interesting point, I read a few
weeks ago about a reasearch group who had found a material with such high
IOR properties that it actually stopped the light dead - ie reduced it
velocity to zero and suspended the photons in a gas - which makes it very
useful for optical computers.

Very nice image, but could you please post the complete source for
this scene?

Yes, please!
I'll render it on a falling piece of fabric that i've got here. (It's
triangle mesh but it should be possible.)
