Original picture was on 800x600, and reduced
with Picture Publisher 8.0 to 320x240.

Backgroup is absolutely black and makes a
bad effect on the pieces' texture (see picture 2).
Problem of radiosity ?

Just like that, I'd guess that you used
a lathe object for the pawn and bishop.
So I would say that the effect is due to
the spline that doesn't give you a flat
surface there.
