Very cool
How did you achieve the lit edge effect? Slope texture oriented with the camera
perhaps?

no radiosity, no lights are used ... only isos and a skysphere ...

Assuming no post processing was done, that only leaves high ior values on an
isosurface whose texture is enough opaque at the center to obscure an ambient
object from the camera on the iso's far side. Perhaps even an ambient portion of
the sky sphere's texture. At least that's the only other thing I can think of
that might create this effect, and it would take a loooong time to render.

Slope_map?

Two copies of the isosurface, one scaled slightly larger than the other,
with the outer one being mostly transparent, and a max_trace_level of 1.

The best guess so far ...

There are two ISOs ... one with threshold 0 and the other one with threshold
0.01 ...
the inner one is pigment 0 ambient 0 diffuse 0
the outer one has rgbt <0,0,0,1> and emitting media 1

because of the low threshold difference I had to change accuracy to 0.00001
and the formula has a maxgradient of 95 or so ... so it it very slow ...

I just realized, that instead of media I could have used fade_color 1,
couldn't I ???

I think fade_color 1 gives no attenuation.
