Here's my version of a ball on a plane!

Uses 3.5's functions and built in patterns  and a isosurface sphere. The sky
is media and the sea a boring old plane. Took 15hrs to render mainly because
of the texture of the ball which uses different colours for reflection min
and reflection max, irid and just about everything else I could throw at it.

IMHO the description you give of the image does not apply to what I see

The iso sphere could be just a primitive sphere with a normal, as the edges
look perfectly round. Great sky.. rivals Terragen's. How was it done..
layered planes? I'd love to see the code for it.

Yes I was puzzelled by that - increasing the height of the surface though
increased max_gradient to nearly 3000!!! and I think because of the ridges
in the pattern, the dips will probably never show.

Awesome!  It has a very nice metallic-but-not-really look, like a
metallic paint, but not quite like a cheap novelty, somehow more
authentic looking.  Know what I mean?  :)

I wouldn't expect them to show much at all at the edges.  I like it how
it is.  It might add a little to the pic if the ridges actually went
straight instead of along the surface of a sphere, but that would be
almost impossible, and besides, at this res it'd be a difference of a
few pixels at most.

Code for sky in p.b.s.f I've continued to play with the isosurface code and
it is now something totally different.
