According to legend this object known as the "Key to Light" grants its
possessor power over light and shadow. For an as yet unknown reason all
photos of the object, like this one, contain no color except for the object
itself.

Okay, now try it with radiosity and photons and see if you can keep the
grays :-)

You might want to thicken those display case sides some to make AA better.
I'm trying to figure out if the gray part of the Key to Light is has a
normal or if I'm seeing reflection.

Looks a bit like the Bane Mystech emblem in Anachronox (guess what I'm
playing ATM :) Try squishing some bugs on it and see what happens ;)

Bye for now,

I thought about Radiosity but at 3h 18m 17s for this version on my pII 400 I
decided to stop here. Actually I intended it to be lighter but I got such a
nice effect from it being dark that I decided to leave it this way.
Yes, it does have a normal but is also reflective.

I had not heard of that game until you mentioned it. I came up with the
design all on my own. If you notice the colored gems are the primary and
secondary components of white light. Each set is in a triangular
configuration.

No kidding! I'm contemplating taking on a several week render with my
current image, and some might even consider that only mildly long.
