Hi,

What with recent talk of depth of field/focal blur, I decided to dust off my
old 'segment sphere' and use the recommended 'variance 0' in an image.
However, I found that things were speeded up tenfold on the first 25% of the
render by using 'variance 0.0001' instead, because the image is
predominantly 'background' here. Probably could have gone a lot higher than
0.0001 and still had very smooth looking DoF, but decided to just let this
render finish.

blur_samples 100
variance 0.0001

image size: 400 x 400
render time : 10 hrs 50 mins approx
P200 MMX
48Mb RAM

Needless to say, I'll not be rendering an animation!

Very smooth. I like. It's amazing how such a simple effect makes these
things so much more realistic.
