On a sunny day the irradiance of sunlit and shadowed areas can be off
by a factor of 10^5 and even more. Of course, our eyes react
non-linearly but still, trying to represent this on a screen is a
heavy task. Kari seems to know the most about this stuff, maybe if
you're a good boy... ;)

 >2?! Keep brightness low (0.75 - 1) and use a recursion of 2. Lower
diffuse and maybe increase brilliance a bit, that should give you more
contrast. Ditch the fill lights altogether except if you really need
them, but use light groups to only illuminate the parts you want.
