Right, I've added textures to everything on the fortress, changed the shape
of the island, added some rather cartoony grass, and turned of the swirly
smoke (but I might put it back in later). I also experimented with some
hills like loads of people were suggesting, and I was surprised to see that
they really work! I might add a few more :)

What do you think I should do next?

When I was young I used to collect stamps, and I remembere the being one
from Israel that this image riminds me of, the stamp had a similar colour
scheme and was oblong like your image.  One thing that I remember now
from the stamp is that there was barbed wire close to the camera, this might
also add something to your work here.

I think: nothing (on this piece of work, that is). It's great as it is; 
I like the colours and the textures, as well as the shadows the fortress 
throws! Very good!
