It looks...hot. It gives me the distinct sense that touching it would
result in a sizzling noise and scorching smell, shortly followed by
screams of pain.
Nice effect...does it use photons, or "conventional" faked caustics? Or
something else?

I get the feeling this ought to be cupped in a pair of hands, wrists
together, pushing it out of a liquid metal. Like Excaliburs' sword
lifting from the lake.

its a png image map with various filter values, transmit set to 1, fliter
to 1 as well, a touch of ior (.99), same image map use as a bump map (height
5) to give the fine lines, media, and standard pov caustics.

it gets 90% of its colour from the red plain

I am always playing with sfx textures, but very rarly come up with something
i like enough to post :)
