Does everyone keep a `sphere and plane' scene lying around to test
textures?  Here are my usual test scenes.  (The sphere here is now a
superellipsoid{<0.8,0.8>}.)

yup :) I have a selection of primitive objects and a simple csg on mine, but
essentially its the old sphere over a plane
