Looks more like a patch glitch to me.

At a rough guess, I'd say that the sphere(?) was modelled in sPatch or 
Hamapatch.

I think that that image is going to be a 'keeper' though.  I like it :)

Yep.

It *is* made of bicubic patches, but I *didn't* use a modeller!

I can't remember such creatures from the story itself, but I recall having
seen a version of the book in a bookstore which had such creatures on the
front. Is that correct?
