I tried the same technique i used for the earth some time ago, see:

for rendering the Mars surface. The topography data is from:

http://wufs.wustl.edu/missions/mgs/mola/megdr.html

and the coloring uses a much lower resolution image.

The first image shows the whole planet, rendered in various tiles like
before. The second image shows a closeup view of Valles Marineris.

very nice.

as i understood from your earth renderings, rendering animations of this is
not possible. (becouse of the render time)

dit the color map contain any shadows? or did you position your "sun" at a
position matching the color map?

jaap.

Thanks.

Nothing is impossible. In fact these render quite fast. But for an
animation you don't need such high resolution, therefore other techniques
will probably be more efficient.

There was shading in the image used for texturing. The worst thing was
that it is a composite of different images with varying shading, therefore
it was quite impossible to remove it. A strong blur helped but of course
you loose a lot of detail this way.

High!

Gorgeous images, especially the Valles Marineris close-up... no vertical
exaggeration? But still some nitpicking - normally, Martian atmosphere is
never completely cloud-free, there are always some whispy haze clouds. Are you
sure that the Martian sky really blends from light pink via dark blue to
black?

I rember an orbital Viking shot showing no blueish gradient at all (attached
here)

Still another problem: I tried your link to the high-res Mars maps and
downloaded a small version (4 pixels/degree), but neither Irfan View nor the
GIMP can handle these IMG files - I only get error messages! What can I do?
