Here is my attempt at making something chrome-like.  It's a bit
cartoonish, but it is done with very highly-reflective surfaces and a plane
hovering out of view of the camera.  The plane has a checkered surface
with colors of rgb 0 and rgb 3.  The finish is ambient 1.

looks good, the normal on the disc could maybe be a little less pronouned
though

if you don't want to be able to see the plane, try using the no_image flag

plane {
    ...
    no_image
}

It looks like the stuff my mom used to collect. She was really into the
crinkled chrome look. Nice work.

Thanks, Kevin.  I had forgotten about that flag. Mostly I was just fooling
around a bit with this image.  This morning it doesn't look as neat to me as
it did last night.  I have started getting some better effects using
radiosity instead of point lights for illumination.  Trying that now ...

I thought that increasing the white level to a really high point
would make it very bright and shiny.  Does it actually make a
difference?  I'm not sure.  Does anyone know the algorithm
for how color and ambience affect brightness?

To me this looks more like an overflowing pond of quicksilver.
Less 'normal' would give it a more rigid appearance.
