With a bit more repetition, you can see the weakness
of this technique.  As Gilles said, the most difficult
things are realistic placement, and effective texturing.
This image probably doesn't have either, but it is
sort of interesting.  Maybe someone else will be inspired.

Mosaic's rarely are perfect!... Its the imperfections that make things look
real.  :)

This is indeed very inspirational!

As for the algorithm couldn't you just trace() points onto the object, and
orient the tiles to the normal of the returned point?  I don't know how
this would work with the textures, but it should be able to stick tiles onto
a wall.
