Those shafts of light you get from a partly cloudy sky - when you get about 4 or
5 of them they seem to diverge from a common point, like spread out fingers. I
think Francois has got the (fairly obvious) answer.

    Then not the cloud shadows I was talking about at all. These only happen
at sunrise and sunset and are on the other side of the sky from the sun.
Nearly invisible shadows that seem to point back together if they are high
enough.

    I think Attached photo "RuffledClouds04" is what you are talking about,
but SunsetClouds20 has a hint of what I am talking about. Starting from the
center of the image and going up to the upper right corner, a slightly
darker line. I couldn't find a better shot of it so I include a quickly
drawn diagram "shadows" (complete with elbow jogging from Alexander). If you
ever get a chance, look for them, they show the shape of the atmosphere as
they diverge from the sun, spread to their thickest overhead and then
converge at the opposite horizon.
