Applying some filters to a heightfield led to an interesting result so i
decided to make a scene of it...

Focal blur got a bit grainy, but i wasn't patient enough for better
settings.

Height field?  Guess it's the web-like sides of that cube then.

Where art is concerned it doesn't matter, and this image certainly has a
nice look to it.  Being able to see some jaggies at the focal plane is
another matter IMHO  ;-)  Sorry, had to say it!

That's probably a combination of missing antialiasing and jpeg artefacts,
maybe some smoothing afterwards would be good.

Several matrix filters, mostly blurring.  I don't remember the exact
sequence.

Did you start with some *hand made* sketches? By "hand made" I mean made
with a paint program.

Not really, i used a faulting algorithm like described for example in:

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~johol/fwmg/fwmg.html

with very few iterations and applied a differentiation filter afterwards. 
The result is similar to drawing some random lines.

It reminds me of a crystallization experiment of sodium acetate at my high
school's chemistry laboratory! Very pretty!
