Ouroboros.

The scales are a texture? If so, make a tapered torus with the new
(Megapov) parametric object.

That's the third way of spelling it I've come across!

No, the scales are not a textures there are about 4 1/2 thousand individual
scales positioned to create a torus - I also have a spiral version I'm busy
on at the moment.

I'll post it tomorrow - it's a mess and very badly written but it might give
someone a idea or two.

That's nothing, I once rendered a picture with 33 million blades of grass,
each of about 60 triangles!

Eek! I don't even want to think about how long that took to render. Oh
well. I guess I will go back to experimenting with combinations of
radiosity, isosurfaces, media and photons (if I can ever get that much
patience).
