The cylinder is just a mirror, reflecting the image map drawn on the
"cup".
Not perfect yet, but the idea seems good.

Witty! Hmm... I wonder if you could make it work with a sphere, it
would make for a nice twyst of the classic reflecting sphere setup.

It shouldn't be difficult to do it using a spherical camera. Put the
image map on a plane and put the camera where the sphere will go, and
use the resulting image in the final image.
