I get the same error message in NS 4.72 but the image will display
in IE4. Strange !

Well, I see a light gray smudge that sometimes for brief "flashes" 
develops a small dark spot in the center(the gray around the edges fades 
out and the center darkens). I take it that isn't supposed to be what I 
see...maybe monitor gamma. :-)

I see a sphere with an unevenly scaled black and yellow checker texture 
above/in front of a plane with the same texture rotated 90 degrees. Am I 
supposed to see something else?

By strictest definition a shade of a color has the same hue and lower
intensity. You can't have a shade of balck.

No. I don't see a circle. I see a hazy blurred grayish area surronded
by a white background but I don't see a circle per se.

approximate shade of white is a circle. :)
