Mostly to show off some results of the cloth simulator I've been
working on... What do you think of the table cloth?

Looks like plastic or stiff canvas.

I like this.

Are you modelling physical behaviour of the cloth ?

Will the cloth obey gravity if you tilt the table ?

True, it depends on the parameters you feed the system (I'll post
another image tomorrow with greatly different parameters, I would have
posted it today, but it needs some pretty heavy antialiasing and it
hadn't finished when I left this morning).

Yes it will. I can also put the cloth in a more complex environment and
it'll adapt to whatever I put in there (I'll post an example tomorrow).

Wonderful work, Jerome. :) I can't wait to see more, and get my hands on
what you use to make this.

looks good, although the cloth seems quite stiff.

There seem to be at least two triangular shadow segments indicating that
it's a mesh, but i suspect you could increase resolution if necessary.

Is the simulator coded in POV or some external program ?

It is a mesh and yes you could increase the resolution but of course
this would slow down the simulator a lot (unless you up the resolution
afterwards)

It's an external C++ program. I'm afraid it would be *very* slow if it
was to be coded in POV...

Does it detect self-collision?

That's probably worth considering, but how slow exactly are things ?

I understand that, will you publish it when it's ready ?

Looks good, a bit too stiff though.

If you're going to do more images like this, you might add fading to
your light, so we don't have to see that floor pattern extending to
infinity. ^^;

Excellent piece of work. I hope you will publish the finished result.

Not yet. I've got an idea how to implement it in a reasonably fast way,
but since I probably won't need it for my irtc entry, I'll wait a little
before adding other features (such as a user interface, other object
types and self collision)

Most of my tests tool 10-20mn to compute, but increasing the time
increases faster thant the resolution...

I'll probably publish something next week (core simulation engine, need
to edit the source and recompile each time you want to change any
parameter). I'll get back to it and make it more usable once I've
finished my irtc entry

Will this thingy be open-source, so some other clever person can improve on
it later?

The Provot papers deal with self-colision as well. If you don't have them, I
can e-mail them to you.

Yes please, I'd be very interested to see how others have tackled the
problem.

Yes, it'll almost certainly be GPLed.
