What do you think this looks more like - a UFO or a spacecraft?
(It's not the technical definitions I'm after, just your first impression.)

Anyway, it's not finished but here's the basic design. I don't go for
realism, so I've kept it simple.

What do you think? Comments please! :)

Spacecraft to me. I think you've captured an appropriate style for Al, if it
were my project I'd lean toward "retro" designs like on 1960's american
automobiles.

Reminds me of the space craft in the Roger Ramjet
cartoons.

Not bad, some propulsion system would be nice.

I think AL would probably look quite good in a more contrasting environment, for
example in something like H.E. Day's new landscapes or something else natural.

It looks like a very futuristic Beetle! Maybe it is??

   AL's Very New Beetle!

Sounds good!

I think it's fitting for Al.
But shouldn't the steering wheel be a joystick? :)

Thanks! I'll add a propulsion system later but it wouldn't be visible from
this angle anyway.

I agree.

I don't go for "functional realism", but I do go for some degree of
"graphical realism".

Example: I want AL to be believable as a living character, but not in the
sense that an alien could look just like that in reality.

Example: I want his spacecraft to look like a real object with somewhat
realistic textures and so on, but it doesn't have to be realistic in the
sense that a spacecraft could be designed like that in reality.

So the point is that I would indeed like to place AL in a somewhat realistic
landscape. :)

Greetings,

Rune
