Currently the fisheye camera view is confined to a circular area.
I would like that to be optional, so I can get results like the ones in the
right column of the images.

Rune,
Generate the fisheye large enough that you can crop out the right-side
picture from the image generated.

Well, that's exactly what I did, but it's kind of annoying to have to do it
that way.
