After some more experimenting with iso-surfacess and
patterns in MegaPOV, I got this image.
There are 3 different built-in patterns at work here.
Can anyone tell which?

Hmmm, Gradient y for the colour, wrinkles for the 'normal', maybe
bozo for the shape?

Looks like something that Gillis Tran would come up with for his Book
of Beginnings

Granite, gradient, maybe leopard for the pillars (very large scale along Y)?

I am going to venture on a limb and say that the basic
shape is the leopard, the striation is done by squished
bozo (or bumps), and the roughness is by granite.
There seems to be a pinch of turbulence here, too.

Wrinkles, gradient and either crackle or one of the bozo-type patterns...

Hello everyone !
Thank you for replying to my post and thank you for
your compliments.
The patterns that are involved in the rendering are:
bozo (i.e. noise3d)
granite
agate (modified by noise3d)
The agate pattern modifies the radius of the columns.
(There is a function that fetches the "field strength"
of the agate pattern at the centerline of the cylinders
and uses this value to modify their radius.)
The bozo pattern "turbulates" the cylinders.
And a small amount of the granite pattern adds a stony
look to the surface of the cylinders.
I have posted the source code to povray.text.scene-files:
