You can do this by "constructing" the patterns. I have a book on
MC-Escher
(Life and Work of MC Escher, but in German) where it is described, how
you can transform any image into a repatable tile...

I know, but that's a somewhat different technique.  This one does not use any
images.  You should also see that the shapes change from top to bottom in the
third picture.
