Greetings everyone.

I am new to POV and to raytracing, and it's been a while since I've
posted anything to a newsgroup (and first time posting using Netscape's
news thing), so please excuse any screw-ups. Attached is a little
object I made that was inspired by the cover art of Douglas R.
Hofstadter's book "Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid". As
far as I know, he invented them for his book (according to what he says
about it, anyway). He took a piece of wood and sawed the appropriate
bits. Neat idea and a wonderful book, if anyone is looking for
something to read.

Anyway, I was thinking of trying to come up with a macro to make
trip-lets out of any three letters, and I was wondering if something
like that already exists. I imagine not, but I thought I'd ask first.
I doubt it would be a very useful macro, but I'm planning on using it to
teach myself how to do them.

Comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated (otherwise I
wouldn't be posting, I guess.)

Oh, BTW, many thanks to the way cylindrical lights are done in MegaPov.
Before I found out about that, I had to trim some of the edges of the object
in order to avoid getting little protrusions because of the light source
originating from a point.

I'm not sure about a macro for this, but there was a period a while back
where a bunch of people posted such images. Some one will probably see your

welcome to the group though...

That's because the cuts for the "E" go through there as well. If you looked at
it straight on from that side (where the light is coming from), it would indeed
look like a "G". If anyone's interested, I can post the source on
povray.text.scene-files, although it's pretty simple. Just a box with some
other boxes "differenced" (I can't really use that as a verb, can I?) from it.

Hope to hear from other people who have done stuff like this. Does anyone know
if these newsgroups are archived anywhere?

This group has been manualy trimmed a couple of times becasue of the
resources it was taking up. The binaries.animations group has likewise
suffered. The News admin will eventually have to set up these two groups
with a 1 year auto expire but for the time being is doing so only when
server resources are strained.

To the best of my knowledge there is no publically available archive
of these groups available. I "think" news admin has a back up of the
server somewhere but I don't know for sure.

I did something like this in my post, "Inspired by PLC" in this
newsgroup, dated 5-5-00. In fact, I had Hofstadter's book in
mind when planning the scene. Also see my post the next day on
text.scene-files.

Welcome! As has been mentioned, a while back a lot of people were making
these. They're easy to make in POV, but look fairly hard to make in real
life...

The experience is valuable rather or not the macro is. If you want to learn
some advanced POVing, just sit on your ass for twelve hours a day coding
scenes and ignore any RL annoyances...

Hmm... the way the box is lighted, it's hard to tell where edges are. How
'bout instead of a red box and colored planes, a white box and white planes
with colored lights? That way the different faces of the box will be diferent
colors.

Kevin,
this is an awesome start! I remember that back then when Eric Freeman
posted about a million pictures exploring this concept, I couldln't
for the life of me do one of these. I am not sure I can now either. If
somebody cares to explain, though...

I think you should definitely look for Eric's stuff, I remember him
doing a few with Gothic-style letters (which should be quite hard,
right?)

Here is something similar that I did a few years ago for the cover of a
zine (APA-L #1743, if you couldn't guess!). Intersection of two text
objects.

This one is simply shiny, but for the actual covers I rendered about 42
different versions with different refraction values (0<ior<1) for the
Object.

Hello back.
This is a very intriguing image/ray trace. Now I want to do my initials!
:-)
I don't remember anything like this being shown around here before, I see
though others say a similar has so I must have missed it or it's been too
long ago or my mind is going.
A macro to do this could be useful for logos.
It shouldn't be difficult at all (so I'll try it myself too).

Do you mean to do something like

intersection {
  text { ttf "faktos.ttf", "G", 2, 0 translate <-0.25,-0.36,-1>
         scale <4,2.4,1>}
  text { ttf "faktos.ttf", "E", 2, 0 translate <-0.25,-0.36,-1>
         scale <4,2.4,1> rotate y*90}
  text { ttf "faktos.ttf", "B", 2, 0 translate <-0.25,-0.36,-1>
         scale <4,2.4,1> rotate x*90}
  pigment {rgb 1}
}

(where the translations and scales would be adjusted for the particular
font, so that the letters just about fit within box {-1,1}), or are you
building the thing from CSG?

How gratifying to be remembered.

I posted an early version (in a different typeface and, iirc, with a
much lower viewpoint), in which each of the component text objects had a
solid color, so the intersection had just two colors: green and orange?
Also tried wood and stone; can't recall whether I posted any of those.

In the final version(s), all the light is reflections of the sky.
(Since it's for a scifi club, I put a yellow sun and a red sun on
opposite horizons.)

I didn't even think of using text objects for it. That's kind of neat.
However, I did it basically how Hofstadter did it, starting with a cube and
removing bits from it.

Here's the scene, a little bigger, with the changes you suggested. I also took
out the other light source, so that the spotlights are the only light. I really
like this one. Thanks for the suggestion, David.

I made this exact setup a while back using the MegaPOV min_extent and

The responses take up very little space campared to images, it makes it
more consistant and understandable if posts are trimmed by date.

From what I've heard/read the sales of the IRTC CDrom support the maintenance
and and H/W of this server, and if all the regular visitors bought the CD
then there wouldn't be a space issue.

I'm not speaking for the POV team or the IRTC here, just repeating what I've
read.

are pretty pointless when left behind after the original image has been

i was under the impression that the server had been donated. maybe not
huh? so how many IRTC cdroms are sold? and what are the operating

This reminds me of a catalogue that I got from a guy selling wooden puzzles in
Covent Garden (don't know if he is still there, this is probably 10-12 years
ago). He could make a cube puzzle from any three letters so that each letter
could be extracted through the side. Slightly more imaginative than the
personalised golfballs you sometimes see advertised.

Bandwidth ! This povray.org server handles the traffic at povray.org,
news.povray.org, the IRTC competition, the TAG home page, the Texture
library, once upon a time a quake server, and possibly other resources
I am forgetting. The server is co-located at company which is a for
profit business that charges its customers for the bandwidth they
consume. For this co-located server the bandwidth is considerable and
the machine takes a beating. Occassionaly the hardward is upgraded
due to failures which are additional costs. All software for the
server is licenced and occassional upgrades to the software cost
additional licensing fees.

It is that, but you can't expect the POV-Team to do so out of thier
own not-so-deep pockets. I have never been told what the operating
costs are for all of this, and consider it none of my business, but
I suspect that they are not cheap. I consider the sales of the IRTC
CD's a viable method of funding these resources and anyone who
really wants to help the cause can do so by purshasing one. It has
been discussed before but the POV-Team will not accept direct
donations.

I have all 3 anyway.

www.ntplx.net , as the button at the main www.povray.org page shows, Andrew
Lindh is president of Netplex. Hope that's not classified info (j/k).
However I don't know who the person is connected with POV-Ray that runs the
site itself. Anyway, if I'm right in following what Ken says, then there
might be a $400 per month fee involved:

thanks for the info. what if files that were to be cancelled were given
the chance to be put elsewhere by pov users before they get cancelled?
or maybe, someone out there already grabs threads they think are worth
keeping? my concern is that some of the most valuable information and
examples are being lost by cancelling them. i understand the need to
free up space, but just tossing stuff out doesn't seem like the 'best'
solution. there are a lot of free hard drive things on the internet.
maybe an image and its replies could be zipped and placed in one or more
of these drive sites? i'm just throwing ideas out, so if anyone has
better ideas, i'm all ears.

Hopefully not. This is why I keep insisting that people use the groups
correctly. This group is for showing images and receiving comments.
If you post code for your scene then it should be moved to one of the
*.scene-files groups. Discussions about features should be taken to
.general, .advanced-users, or .new-users. I have lobbied hard to get
the admin. not to remove material posted to those groups so that those
resources would not be lost. I know you lose the reference image but
the code is there for you to render yourself. Perhaps not a perfect
solution but the best we have to offer at the present time.

I have made a macro that makes trip-lets. It's really simple, and I doubt
anyone would actually use it, but it's my first macro, so I put it up on a web
page. Check out http://www.mindspring.com/~jacksonmead for the stuff. The
font needs some work, but I was more interested in the macro part. I had to
leave a little bit on the edges of the block, otherwise some letter
combinations had letters taking chunks out of each other (the z-axis letter
interfering with the y-axis letter, for example). I may diddle around with it
some more, or I may move on to more interesting stuff. I'd love to see any
other attempts at this or improvements on my attempt.

Hi, Ryan (and everyone else). Please see message "IRTC CDROM's and
supporting this site [14-June-1999]" in the announcement group.

The POV-Team has decided that sales of the IRTC CD-ROMs is the best
overall solution, as well as the simplest. It provides a nice archive
for those who appreciate the IRTC and POV-Ray, as well as generating
some form of income to help offset the costs of maintaining this server.

In general, we feel that people are more likely to make a one-time
purchase of these annually-released, low-priced CD-ROMs than to commit
to something long term like becoming a CompuServe member, which would
have supported these operations several years ago. We'd also like to
avoid, for lack of a better term, the 'beg-athon' when we need to
upgrade some hardware on the server machine. Because small contributions
may be mailed from just about anywhere in the world, a fee will likely
have to be paid to a bank to convert to local currency. Way too much
trouble and takes too long when a failing drive needs to be replaced
like *right now*.

Please order your IRTC CD-ROMs, folks. This how you can help support
this server in the long term. I've purchased all three available IRTC
CD-ROMs <hint, hint>. Thank you for your support :)

I, too, was inspired by G.E.B. The problem with making a macro is that not
all 3 letter combinations can be carved out of a block. I discovered this
while trying to do my wife's initials (CFF). Any two letters can be done,
though. The gothic-lettered ones, as I recall (lost the code in a hard
drive crash) were made with a union of two paper-thin text objects, one
rotated.

I mean 3 paper-thin text objects, two rotated.

I just found the code for the image (sorry about not putting the file size
in the subject). I re-did it in MegaPOV. You'll find it in
.binaries.scene-files.

(Does anyone besides me read year-old posts?)

It occurs to me that this thing might look even better if it could
somehow be done as blobs with parametric sheets for cores. (The sphere
has a point for a core, and the cylinder component has a line segment.)
But I'd want the blob components not to add where the strokes of the `A'
meet.

Yet another idea for a patch that I'll write any century now!
