Here's my dad's first image. He made it mostly by himself with the
exception of the media atmosphere (which I made).
Please tell what you think!

This is my dad's first image, and besides showing him the basic operation of
Moray, all I did was the media around the world.
BTW, the media is very basic, but here's the source anyway:
#declare Earth_Media =
material // Earth_Media
{
texture
{
pigment
{
color rgbf <1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0>
}
}
interior
{
media
{
emission rgb <0.0, 0.0, 0.5>
density
{
spherical
}
}
}
}

I think you need to work on the atmosphere. It seems too dense to me.

Ah, my bad then. I did that.
How does the rest of the image look to you, though?

The saucer textures look identical, so maybe tell him about using
scaled/rotated/translated variations :-)
And why isn't your Dad's first render just a sphere or box or cone or torus
alone?

Mmm, spacealicious!
Just tell him to be careful of the power cord and exposed nail while
he's working at your computer...
okay, bad joke

Hey, shaddap :-)
Actually, to prevent him from taking time on MY computer, I moved my Moray
and POV-Ray directories to his computer. That took a while... (2 hours
through a 10Mbps network, to be exact) and I got plenty of PokéTime ;-)

My son's first image is already long overdue...
Your dad is much faster/better/smarter/ than my son!

LOL :-)
He did pretty good for his first try. Considering this isn't your
reflective sphere on checkered plane, he made it in pretty good time for a
learning experience. He started this image in only an hour and a half
before I actually posted it, which is pretty good time, IMHO.
Heh, I wonder how those ships would look on my asteroid image? Hey, that'd
be cool!
BTW, he pulled out the graph paper for his next image, so it's probably
going to be a pretty big project. Watch around for it :-)

Your family is kinda weird: usually dad's teach kids to RT :-)
But for first image it is very good (I managed to render a sphere, which
wasn't even on checkered floor). Only the background seeems to "stem"
and makes me think that aliens are boiling sea water...

Yeah, so? :-) Also, I'm the one in this house that hands down computers AND
clothes (and even a music CD to mom once, hehe), so you are right about the
weird part.

I rendered a funky looking plastic ball in an outdoor area with lens flare
for a sun. How's that? ;-)

Do you mean "steam"?
I should have probably made the atmosphere a little thinner.

Well, when I started raytracing, I didn't even know what a lens flare
looked like, until I saw the filter in PhotoShop. I never thought this
could be done in POV. I remember how I gasped when I saw Nathan
O'Brien's entry with the boat and the fireworks and how I scavenged
the net to get Chris Colefax' include file etc. Now such things are
taken for granted but it was not always so. Spoils the kids, methinks
:)
