I know it's still missing a couple of details, but it's not too bad, I
think.
Rendered with unofficial OS/2 PM compile of 3.1g Linux sources.

Everything about this (lighting, textures, composition) is amazing!
Hand coded? 400 hours on your Athlon? Beautiful!

was this done in pov? i was just watching sg1 the other night and was
thinking about someday doing a model of this. what did you use for
textures? have you attempted the iris or the gate effects? way back
when someone posted a 'star gate' i was disappointed when i clicked on
it and it wasn't this stargate. good job.

by the way, aren't you the guy that did the fabulous original enterprise
(orbit.pov)? i've changed the halo in that to use media and am
currently using a derivative of your clouds in a planet i'm working on
(will actually post later today). i don't think you post very often do
you? how long does it take you to do a project? i'd be interested to
know some of your texturing methods (modelling isn't a problem). again,
good work.

I'm impressed !
Especially I like your work with the cables and the pipes.
Only one little detail bothers me: There are some symbols on the
"wheel" that is covered by the "V-cut outs".

Yes, hand coded. I think it took about 12 hours to render on an AMD
K6-2/500.

Yes; my own compile for OS/2, but using the official Linux 3.1g sources.

It's all texture{} statements.

It is capable of producing the rippling "water" effect, but I haven't
added in the iris or worked on the "whoosh" yet. (All the chevrons are
independently animatable and lightable, and of course the glyph ring
turns. It can also be set to resemble the prop from the original movie,
which was slightly different from the one on the TV series.)
> by the way, aren't you the guy that did the fabulous original enterprise

Yeah, that was me, thanks for remembering it. My Enterprise model is
currently under revision, because the blueprints I worked from weren't
entirely accurate in places, and it will soon (I hope) be joined by a
Klingon D7.
> i don't think you post very often do you?
Not really, no; I have to juggle 3D work with a whole bunch of other
hobbies. If I can put together one really nice image that I'm happy
with every few months, I consider myself lucky.
> how long does it take you to do a project?
Depends on the scope. In this case, the Stargate itself took about two
weeks, and the reproduction of the set took about a month and a half,
whenever I could squeeze in a couple of hours at night.
> i'd be interested to know some of your texturing methods (modelling

Any textures in particular? What I seem to be doing most frequently is
to create a "clean" and "dirty" version of a particular texture, and
then make a bozo composite of the two, adding turbulence and raising the
omega and lambda, then scaling the resulting texture between 2-5 times
longer in the Y direction, depending on how "streaky" I want it to look.

I'm afraid there's not much I can do about that; I tried to reproduce
the prop from the TV series as closely as possible, which means
obscuring some of the glyphs.

Very realistic! The movie was kinda good, but from what I've seen of the TV
show IMHO it's kinda not... Interesting render subject nonetheless.

I think, the water effect would be to much for it (would hide the nice
back wall by the way :-)
I remember a lot of steam around the gate during motion. You could try
that.

I was kind of skeptical of the show when I first ran across it, but it
kind of grew on me. I certainly like Richard Dean Anderson's portrayal
of O'Neill better than Kurt Russell's O'Neil. And some of the
storylines are pretty good. What they *really* need is a decent villain
with some depth to him (if only Richard Delgado were still alive)...

I took the DVDs of the movie and the first three episodes of the series
(which is all MGM has seen fit to release in the US, even though the UK
has the majority of season 2 out on DVD already), and went back and
forth through them, drawing out every detail I could see (having a zoom
function on my DVD player helped a lot). Then I used CorelDRAW to make
up some schematics based on the drawings, and took measurements from
those to build the models. A couple of things are "best guess", since
the objects in question were in deep shadow or only shown from an acute
angle, but I think I got pretty close.

1. CorelDRAW 3.0, to draw some schematics (from which to take
measurements),
2. Fontographer, to create a TrueType font of the glyphs,
3. A couple of command-line calculators, which I wrote to help me
figure out angles and distances, and
4. OS/2 System Editor (equivalent to Windows Notepad) to do the
actual modelling.
I think that was pretty much it. Apart from POV-Ray, of course. :-)

It varies from episode to episode...generally they are pretty good(The
best SF show on local TV here, actually.), but there are a few which are
just plain boring or have bad plot flaws.
They do tend to suffer from the problems of having aliens look like
humans in costumes, but they also have good non-humanoid aliens. And
most of the time they are interacting with humans on other worlds, so it
isn't so bad.
They also handle language fairly well(the characters appearing surprised
when an alien speaks up in english, for example, and having an
explanation for it), though there were a couple episodes where they
really blew this one too.

any suggestions for accurate battle damage would be appreciated if you

To get off topic they all look like humans because they are supposed
to. The idea is that the bad guys populated a whole bunch of worlds
with humans for slaves. Now star trek has a problem with only humanoid
aliens.

This is really excellent work. The only gripe I have is that the back wall
needs to be either darker, dirtier, or both. That and the concrete collum
off to the left needs more detail. (Perhaps a light granite or bozo
normal??)
Other than those minor nitpicks, *cool dude*!!

They weren't the ones I was talking about...I meant the non-humans: the
Nox, Goa'uld, Asgard, Bysra, Reetouh, "Ancients", etc. The Nox were
practically indistinguishable from humans, but they are a much older
race.
BTW, as I understand it, the Goa'uld use humans mainly as hosts, they
simply keep the population working as slaves to make it worthwhile. And
I still think it is strange for a population separated from earth for
centuries or millennia to speak American English.
I think the only other host they can take is the "Unas", a creature from
their home world with which they developed a symbiotic relationship.
This explains why they feel it is so important to keep humans
primitive...humans represent the only source of host bodies other than
the nearly extinct population of Unas. :-)
BTW, I hope "Followup-To" works right...this is the first time I have
used it. This should continue in povray.off-topic.

Strange; it has the same texturing as the rest of the concrete. I guess
it's just not lit well enough for it to show. (When I turn on the
lights on the ramp railings, it does bring out the texture a bit more.)

A beaut of a model/scene/render. The lights on the walls don't seem to
illuminate the nearest region of wall they are attached to, which might be a
case of texture-tweaking and light fade tweaking.
I can't help but to think of 3DS or other such commercial apps, so that might
be a problem :-)
You have certainly made a triumphant scene here, let me say that.

I don't know about the gate itself: I never saw one before. But I like the
floor very much - what do you do to the texture to give it this natural
look? The technical objects all look very good and 'life-like' as far as
inanimate things go.
Congratulations with this great render!

I like the composition, and the details are just fine for me, but you
might want to make the cartuches (sp?) a bit bigger and a bit more
defined.

Here's what I used (well, I've cleaned it up a bit for readability):
#declare T_CleanFloor = texture { /* grey-blue painted cement */
pigment { bozo
colour_map {
[0 rgb <0.8875,0.8875,0.9>]
[1 rgb <0.7000,0.7500,0.8>]
}
warp { turbulence 1 lambda 2 omega 0.9 }
}
finish { specular 0.5 roughness 0.01 }
}
#declare T_FloorDirt = texture { /* dark brown, non-shiny dirt */
pigment { colour rgb <0.55,0.45,0.35> }
}
#declare T_DirtyFloor = texture { bozo
texture_map {
[0.75 T_CleanFloor]
[1.00 T_FloorDirt]
}
warp { turbulence 1 lambda 3 omega 0.95 }
scale 10
}
I know it could have been done with a layered texture, but that
generally seems to render more slowly, and this image takes long enough
as it is! :-)

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure why that's happening. When I do a test
render with point lights rather than area_lights, they illuminate the
walls better.

What do you mean by cartouches? The glyphs on the turning ring, or the
carvings on the stationary bits?

The ones on the turning ring are the only ones I can see. I thought the
movie called them cartouches. It's been a while since I've seen the movie.

| Yeah, I'm not exactly sure why that's happening. When I do a test

| walls better.
Possibly self shadowing of the light fixture, but most likely is that because
each point in the array is reduced in brightness in order to remain at the
original point source intensity. Why that would actually dim the local area
more might have something to do with what can be seen by using multiple point
lights and using a sum total of greater than 1 to achieve the same brightness
as a single rgb 1 light source.
Just speculation, of course.

AFAIR, a cartouche is a collection of glyphs, somewhat analogous to a
signature.
And I think the movie called them 'symbols', but the resident smartarse
egyptologist had to decode a tablet with cartouches engraved onto it.
It's also been a while since I saw the movie, so take anything I say with
a reasonably large pinch of NaCl. :)
Bye for now,
Jamie

isn't that printer the new big brother to the relatively new 970? i
think the only difference is paper size. i think yours prints like 11
by 17 or something? i have the 970, and i must say this batch of new
printers from hp is impressive, isn't it?

This is excelent. Some really good texturing and some nice
nondescript objects that make it look so real. Thanks for

It surely is! I amaze everybody in my vicinity with the beautiful pictures
it prints. Now I *must* render something worthwhile myself, oh oh!

I love this scene. I'm impressed with the realism you achieved in this scene.
