The image was created with a ridgedmf isosurface. Although low in memory
consumption it took half an hour in a 233 Mhz iMac to render.

Looks promising, even though it misses some reflection of the sky (is
there a sky ? :-)

I'm also not sure about the sharp dark lines.

I think it's great! i belive the dark lines actually _will_ show up. Only a
hunch, of course. I can really see this with some blinn-highlights, photons
and stuff! IMO this ridgedmf is _perfet_ for a semi-stirred-up ocean.

How about some transparency, some slight turbulence in the pigment, and a
foreboding shark fin to go along with the dark, ominous mood?

I haven't thought of using ridgedMF for water yet, it works good! Is yours an
isosurface, hf, or surface normal on a plane?

A great demonstration of the ridgedmf isosurface, congrats! The shape
is great, now go for the surface and interior properties and it'll
look perfect!

Well, actually there is no sky, only a white background. I'll put a sky
and see what happens.

Thanks for the comments. I also considered the blinn-highlights but the
isosurface uses a 1.3 ior and that's too low for this purpose. :-(

Just for comparison, I've attached an actual photograph I took of a
nearby lake. I think Alberto came *very* close to real water with his
POV rendering. You'll notice that those "sharp dark lines" also appear
in my photo.

Maybe some angle dependant reflection would be good.

BTW, if I should have guessed, i would have taken your photo as a
rendering, <joking> you should work on the color </joking> :-)

I agree with you about the ridgedmf, it's really good for water. Maybe
some nonlinear scaling would be good.

To the dark lines: Maybe they are natural, but they are quite
irritating. For a definite conclusion, I think we have to see it with
some sky.

Wow! Excellent shape. That's by far better than the usual waves, bumps
or ripples used for water.
How could this be animated? I guess 'frequency' won't work here. Or am I
wrong?

I think you mean phase...
Anyway, just translating the pattern upward by a clock-dependant amount
should work fine.

I guess that the reality would be gone then. Because you'ld
have to move the different scales of the MF at different speeds
(is this possible?)

Or upward and to the side at the same time might simulate wind affecting the
waves.

I don't think so...the different frequencies/scales should take care of
it. It isn't an actual simulation of water anyway, so it doesn't really
matter...as long as it looks good. :-)

Hi Alberto,

great job. IMHO the water surface needs some more fine structure.
Try a superposition of 3 ridgedmfs, where the next is about
1/3 or 1/4 scale of the previous each. Something like

         isosurface{function{y - myridgedmf( x, 0, z)} +
  0.3 * isosurface{function{y - myridgedmf(3*x, 0, 3*z)} +
  0.09 * isosurface{function{y - myridgedmf(9*x, 0, 9*z)}

You may want to try different scaling factors.

I think this would provide for a nice animation as well,
shifting the 3 components with different speed (first one
fastest).

About the animation I'm not sure. mac povray outputs animation in quick
time movies and I'm not sure if that is a good format for posting in the
corresponding news group.
