Here are examples of the noise_pigment patch...the first image
demonstrates the pigment itself, from left to right:
plain color
plain monochrome
gaussian color
gaussian monochrome
The second image demonstrates it's intended use, as a control pigment
for post_process filters. It was done by averaging the pigment with the
image, using the add and divide post_process filters.
And of course, this pigment is not animation-safe(unless you *want*
shifting static), and anti-aliasing tends to muddy it up into a grayish
mess.

I see people are still mulling this one over. Must be the shock of thinking
that fine, clean renders could be subjected to the equivalent of television
"snow".

I like the idea, but I can't think of any case I would use it. Keep up the
good work, Chris. :)

You would probably use it wherever you would use the "noise" filter in
Photoshop.
I think it might be useful for things like the grainyness of an old
photo, and maybe for adding some randomness to a height field or
image_map...

Or maybe tone it down a bit and produce a slightly faded, randomly
cracked image, just like old paintings? Hmmm ...

I think a crackle pigment combined with this would work well for that
purpose...
