Thanks to Marc-Hendrik, after seeing his rendering, I too am trying a
candle lit scene.
Figured I'd shamelessly plug the upcoming version of POV-Ray while I was
at it, putting it as a book(?) on the table. Not really a book, just
thinking about it. Anyway, there are 3 glass primitives which use both
photons and color dispersion. The lights (Moon and candles) have color
maps from a macro taken out of Prism.inc, one of the demo files, and
color-changed a little to suit the lights.
I had used the soft glow post process on this and neglected to switch
from the Png format I always output to, so no soft glow :-(
Hope you all like it anyhow. If not I'll be rendering it some more,
just give me a chance :-)
P.S. to Marc-Hendrik. I thought of an idea for that dusty look. Maybe
layer on a semi-transparent gradient y color map texture which would
appear to have dust on the uppermost parts of objects.

Very nice on the eyes, Bob. I like the translucent appearance of the
candles, how did you manage it? I thought gradient y at first, but am not so
sure. Media?
Those little objects on the table are neat. Are those photon-mapped caustics
from the glass objects?
About the dust idea: what about using 'trace' to place a bunch of particles
on the tops of things. Or a less memory-intensive way would be to use the
slope pigment. Both of these ways would require MegaPov, though.

Very nice. I'm curious about your mirror finish: it seems to dissipate light
around the candles.
If I was to criticize; the shadows look a bit bright and the candle lights
have somewhat sharp edges.

Silly me, I should have searched better for the filenamePP.png output
from post processing. I found that file, but not before I made minor
changes and rerendered at a smaller resolution. Checked the
documentation and no mention of changes about the added Png support or
file name change it does. I remembered talk of it around here though.
Well, here's the previous unknown rendering this time.

Thanks a bunch, the soft glow one might bother the eyes but it's better
in a way.
Keen perception, right the first time, simply gradient y texture map
having more ambient toward tops.

Yep, photons to go along with the POV-Ray 3.5 shown in the picture :-)

Hmm, you're right, slope texturing would be best. Guess Marc-Hendrik
doesn't use MegaPov though (yet!).

Nice image, Bob. Did you put a normal on that table top? Looks good
that way.
I would have expected a little bit more light reflected onto the table
from the mirror and candles due to photons but maybe it has to do with
the angle of the mirror or the relative brightness of the table.

I was happy the way that turned out, thanks. I wanted it to do that but
it was still guesswork. So what I did was to use a non-black pigment
and diffuse >0 plus a specular highlight but I really couldn't say what
caused it most. There was no need to make any adjustment.
| If I was to criticize; the shadows look a bit bright and the candle

Criticize all you want. There is a shadowless light having the color of
the candle light except dimmer, maybe not dim enough. Keep in mind
there is also Moonlight coming in at a shallow angle from the right side
too, however I couldn't say for certain whether all this light is the
cause for lack of darker shadows rather than ambient in the table and
room. I suspect it's a combination.
About the sharpness of the candle flames, don't get me started on that.
Do you realize how long I tweaked on just those flames?! ;-) Seriously
though, I doubt I could change them much without finding myself with
very different and unwanted flames. But good to hear your opinion.

Thanks, it's pretty simple, turbulent wood pigment + normal.

Well, you noticed the worst part about this thing. Metallic objects
refused to show photon caustics.
Actually I had the spiral patterned disc at center showing a shininess
onto the table at upper right side during one point in the early stages
of rendering this. I also had brighter candle holders too but no
photons reflecting off of them at the same time as that. It has me a
bit perplexed to say the least. Par for the course as usual.

Glad you got inspired by my humble attempts!
I like your candles. How did you make the flames?
Where does the shadow on top of the mirror's frame come from? Is it from the
Window?
For the dust: Yes, that's a good idea. I threw a little media in my scene
and I think it does what I was after, but being of the "fantasy-kind", I'll
probably make more dusty scenes :-) I'm just setting up povray to render my
scene again in high quality which will probably take about ten hours (the
rendering, not the setting up :-)). I'll post the result.

Yep, it helps, believe me.
| I like your candles. How did you make the flames?
Scaled spherical media method 3 in MegaPov 0.5 using a double media
statement within single interior, that's pretty much it, less the
tweak-tweak-tweak part.

Yes, window pane border. Which remained in place while I moved the Moon
around instead. Try that in real life!

As long as you haven't quit there's always hope. <g> But you would
really be doing yourself a favor by doing some investigation into
M.P.0.5. Like Samuel suggested the slope dependant texturing should be
perfect for applying a layer of dust texture over things. Maybe
Tony[B], among others, has done that.
It can be tricky to understand the workings however.

Nice moon detail. But where is the man ? :)
But I think the mirror frame could need some work.
(And maybe only one candle showing in the mirror
would be enough/better.)

That's a ridged multi-fractal, and a pretty lame excuse for one at that.
My first try at it. Actually there are 2 of them there to make it
fancier. Same, except the top part is scaled to be thin.
| Nice moon detail. But where is the man ? :)
Ignore the Moon surface. It's only a 'spotted' pigment pattern there.

Yep, I won't argue over that. In fact, notice how the mirror is
symbolic of a moon itself and the candles align at the wicks in both
reflection and otherwise? I over-composed, didn't I? :-)

Hmmm. Beautiful, the colouring of the candle flames is great,
but seems to get a bit flattened as reflected by the mirror.
The moon is very good. I always like seeing your work.
What's that black thing on the table?

| What's that black thing on the table?
I was just about to reply to your other reply ;-)
That "thing" is just that, a thing of unknown meaning etc. It was actually the first
thing I did in this scene, using a image and bump map for the spiral (can't really
tell,
I know...) on the top of it. Unfortunately I keep thinking it's a ladies compact (?)
for makeup application and all because of the mirror there. Well, it's not. Nothing
inside :-)
Glad you like it and anything else I might have done.
To answer about the leaning candle from your other posted reply well it's perspective
camera with angle of 50 (around 67 tends to be about like direction 1 old style
syntax).
I often use 30 to 25 or even less to keep circles and lines from distorting. Reason I
don't sometimes is because people always seem to like the wide angle perspective
camera.
It's another one of those personal preferences that exists bountifully in this medium
of
3D rendering we do.
I had to go back and look again to see about the flat flame. Seems so like you say.
However it must be the turbulence of the media used, since the mirror is perfectly,
er,
flat.
Now you have me wondering if the angle of the mirror would make things flatter or not
:-) Doubtful.
