Ok, there's official POV that can take a day to render a complex
scene...
...and there's Mega POV which has lots of cool stuff, but takes a week
to render a complex scene.
I need milli-POV which is optimized for speed and can render a complex
scene in 10 minutes.

Yeah, and I need a render box with 6 PIII 700Mhz CPU's to speed up my

Could POV utilize this multiprocessor setup?

You would have to run multiple instances of POV-Ray in order to take
advantage of the extra processors.

Have you tried lowering the quality settings? :-)

I agree.
Pov has lots of great features and creates some amazing images, but my
biggest request for a future version would be to have a fast scanline
renderer working alongside the raytracer, even if this renderer did not
support many of the standard Pov features. This would likely solve many
of my preview/animation speed problems.
Of course, I have no idea how much work this would be for the Pov-Team!

The mosaic preview could be used for previews thus shortening your rendering
time until you get things just right...

My point is that there must be a level of performance somewhere between the 45
FPS QUAKE Engine, and the 1FPM (where M is Month) Mega POV engine.

POV-Scan? :-)
It would be a tremendous amount of work...first, you would have to
tesselate all of the primitives. This is impossible for some of
them...and you would have to add tesselation parameters to the language
for all the objects. You would also have to make a completely new
scan-line rendering engine, not much could be reused. And adding a
rendering feature would be at least twice as much work...maintenance
would be quite a bit more difficult.
It would be possible to make a raytracing "preview mode" with no
lighting and simplified shading, and maybe simple depth cuing, maybe
only rendering the bounding shapes, but this is really not very
necessary with the quality level adjustment available.

Thank you for the insight... well it doesn't look like this will be happening
anytime soon. Maybe something for Pov-ray version 10 :)
The quality or mosaic preview are nice but they still fall short when I need
both passable quality and rendering speed at the same time. My current
project ( a physics motion simulation study) will probably take upwards of 1
week to render even with the best possible optimizations I can add to my code.

you can't have a 6cpu PIII based system it's 1 2 4 8 not 6 it's called
semicircle multiprocessing 6 is not a power of 2 :)

Do you think we will need one by then? Computers are getting faster,
even in relation to rendering requirements.

What is your scene file composed of?!? Does it have a huge number of
transparent surfaces, blurred reflections, radiosity with high recursion
levels, etc?

Indeed ! Perhaps Andrew is needlessly over complicating things.

P.S. I would like to point out that this whole thread is off-topic for

Yeah, but the software gets bigger and slower as the PCS do, and we all add
more detail to our renders until it gets too slow.
I'd be interested to run whatever version of POV was out during the 80286
days on my current machine. I know I'd lose a lot of features, but I'd just
like to see.

But the available computing power is growing faster than the amount POV
uses.(I'm not talking about other software, just the class of software
POV-Ray is in.) You render typical scenes faster now than you would have
done "back then", even when using the latest power-hungry features.
There are no where near as many 5-day renders as there used to be, and
most people consider 5 hours slow. Also, more efficient algorithms are
being discovered("differential ray tracing", for example, could be a
good replacement for the blurred reflection patch, and could be a lot
faster.).

It would run faster if you recompiled it with a recent compiler(there
have been a lot of optimization improvements since then), and maybe a
little faster even if you didn't.

You know, you're the first one to call me that since el gefe back in

Sorry, I should have said that it is an animation, that will probably have
over 2000 frames when finished. It certainly doesn't render that slow right
now, but I'm budgeting about 1-3 minutes per frame when it is finished,
which would put the render time at several nights.

The original timeline for my IRTC "Robots" animation was to spend a thousand
hours rendering the 1008 frame animation.
Then the MegaPOV radiosity speedups came along, and it only took 75 hours to
render using a 400MHz AMD K6-2 and three 450MHz Pentium IIs.

I have found that turning on viewing of bounding boxes in Mac POV (Mega
and, I think, official) helps a lot. It doesn't show the 3-d bounding
box, just the 2-d, but it helps for long renders.

I just rendered the good old Fish13 (standard POV-scene file), resolution
1024,768, AA 0.3 on a PIII-600 MHZ, 256 MB-sdram, 20 GB Hard-disk(drive) and
these were the results:

Time for Trace: 0 hours 3 minutes 12.0 seconds (192 seconds)
Total Time: 0 hours, 3 minutes 13.0 seconds (193 seconds)

On a 650Mhz Athlon with 128MB ram, normal render priority, Netscape
downloading this newsgroup, SETI@Home looking for aliens and a CD
playing in the background I get:
Time for Parse: 0 hours 0 minutes 1.0 seconds (1 seconds)
Time for Trace: 0 hours 2 minutes 9.0 seconds (129 seconds)
Total Time: 0 hours, 2 minutes 10.0 seconds (130 seconds)
Drool.
Follow-ups set to p.o-t.
