I have made some Windows icons with the top 5 logos AFAIK.
Maybe one of them will be the official logo for POV-Ray sometime...

How did you make them .ico files? Is it just a BMP file with a special
extention?

No, those are not real .ico files.
I use Microangelo, a program for generating icons and cursors. The best
available I think.

Although #6 is my fav I like that stylistic #11 too. Couldn't easily mistake that one
with another
file type or program, I wouldn't think.

Technically, a .ico is "just a .bmp file" with a special extention, or
more to the point, a collection of .bmp's at different color depths (BW,
4bits (16colors), 8bits (256c) and 24bit)
