Well, I did a little more work on the 3d Truchet tile-->and ran up against
hardware limitations,
still, I think this is a better picture than the previous attempt........
(note:  this image was originally 1500 by 1000)

p.s. the source code has been posted.

Because your desktop is 2 dimensional, you need a 2D Truchet tile to
tile it, rather than a 3D one. Like this:-
