On p.u.p., I reported something about the min_extent function in megapov
0.4.

When using blobs, it returns the min extent of any particular blob
component, not the min extent of the raytraced surface controlled by the
threshold.

The following image shows a blobbed figure, a plane, and two spheres.
The sphere on the right is the point reported by a trace function
directed downward from the center of the blobbed figure. R=1.
The sphere on the left is the min_extent reported for this figure.
(R=5; its center is located under the plane...)

My algorithm was trying to place my figure confidently flat on any
surface....

Suggestion: bind it manually.

I accomplished this with "manual" use of the trace function. I broke up
the x, z plane between min_extent and max_extent into 250 points, and
found the minimum.

Before I came up with this approach, with my blob figure, I spent hours
just trying to get its feet to lie flat on something!
