While looking for the focal point of the parabola I found an unusual
distortion.

isosurface {
                function {
                           (1/4*x^2-y)
                          +(1/4*z^2-y)
                         }
                threshold 0.5
                sign -1
                eval
                pigment { rgb 1 }
                finish { reflection 1 }

           }

Maybe increasing the accuracy or specifying the gradient would help...

    Right. "While searching the Gamma Quadrant for the legendary 'Focal
Point of the Parabola' I found an unusual distortion. We have gone into
orbit and are preparing an away team."

    BTW, the way this scene was set up, we are seeing the sphere in
reflection, it is actually -very- far away -behind- the camera. It's my new
invention, I call it a telescope.

    I tried to do that but then I couldn't type....
