I came across this scene file recently among the files I have which was done for
the IRTC by Sascha Ledinsky for the Water stills round back in '98. I didn't
realize it had come from there at first since I could only look for "Sascha
Ledinsky" by internet search (easier to find than you might think).
I had apparently tried in vain to fix it a year ago so that the render didn't
need to be split into two sections in order for the illusion to work. I had
more success at it this second time now having used boxes to clip the pertinent
parts instead of the planes as was originally done (not as easy as it sounds).
And of course it's still not perfect.
Anyway, it's one of those very interesting 3D models and effects that is
intriguing to many people so I thought I'd show it here. Sascha's is at:
http://oz.irtc.org/ftp/pub/stills/1998-10-31/waterfa1.jpg
Replace the "jpg" with "txt" or "zip" to get to those files there. Anyone
wanting to see my changed version could ask here (don't email) but I have yet to
hear from Sascha regarding passing around this copyrighted scene file modified
or not.

Bob

Okay. Interesting, isn't it? Hope this small rendering shows it okay.
My hard work would only be that this illusion can be rendered in one go, rather
than the two it took before which was what Sascha Ledinsky had to do in order to
get the illusion to work. I've also now heard that this unfinished work was
never completed, sadly enough. If you read the waterfa1.txt at the URL I put
into my other message here an explanation is given as to how it was previously
done.
There isn't really much visible sign of the difference between the before and
after modification renders except for aesthetic change (and less than perfect
fix).
Sascha had done the tough part already.

Thanks, but maybe more trouble than it's worth. I've had to try and explain
here at home to people that I didn't make it to begin with. Maybe that's a good
sign.

I wonder how Sascha's scene would look as a cross-eyed stereogram?

Really neat of course. Problem is how to go about it, since it uses the
'orthographic' camera. I was about to try that anyway eventually just to see if
it could be done by shifting the clipping objects a little and using a very
zoomed in perspective camera.
Will let you know if it can be.

I dont know if it would work correctly , worth a try tho (might give you
more headaches than it worth tho!)

Very good un-illusion :)

And here it is... 3D in 3D. The only headaches might be from trying to look at
it.
I was very surprised to see the illusion didn't actually breakdown, although the
foreground building seems to have moved considerably and I set the mandelbrot
fractal background the same for both renders. All it really took to make this
stereogram was to rotate the camera (zoomed in with 'angle 0.5') a degree and
rotate the clipping objects a little too. Well, I did have to lower the camera
a bit, but I'm not exactly sure why; orthographic to perspective change of some
kind.

Cross-eyed for the left and center, diverged-eyes for the right and center.

If you look real closely you can see the overlap.
This is really just a double-tribar, isn't it...
Everything seems to have that tribar somewhere if you look.

I wasn't sure so I looked it up in one of my Escher books. It's actually three
tribars. The overlap for this one wasn't accounted for as much as in the first
non-stereogram images, I just wasn't going to spend as much time on it for these
quick smaller renders. The other isn't perfect either.

I'm not talking about it being lined up. I mean I can actually see where the depth
changes.
