Came across a pov scene I gathered up from these newsgroups a long while ago, or
so it seems a long time, and started playing around with it. Maybe someone will
recognize it and lay claim to it, it looks very much the same as it originally
did.
Anyway, I had always thought it was a great beach/seashore technique
(isosurface) and wanted to try my hand at a render of it and didn't have a name
here to go with the pov script. So please have a look and refresh everyone's
memory if you can. There are problems and such with this render but never mind
that (like I could convince anyone to not pay attention to the flaws. ha ha).

Could you give more information about your method to get the seashore?
Thanks

The sand texture on this is probably the best I have seen...the water is
good too.

It sort of reminds me of the tutorial for making good water with
WyzPOV...
What is that splotch on the horizon? It looks like an oil rig blew up or
something...(or is it supposed to be smoking?)

Yeah, I don't see much wrong with this. It's got dry sand, wet sand, frothy
water. That makes for a good shoreline.

Hey, quit knocking my fabulous freighter!
Yep, smokestack of a ship in the distance was the idea. I was going on my
experiences at the beach during childhood in Florida. Maybe it's that you have
the uncanny ability to see how a few pixels are made up of a very "primitive"
CSG object. :-)

I found the author of the pov script (for SuperPatch, a.k.a. MegaPov) posted in
the p.t.s-f. group August 14, 1999 11:38AM by Kevin Wampler. I had to reset
that group to locate it but was worth it to look over all the old stuff there.
I'll repost it there at the text.scene-files group (and add his name and email)
so everyone doesn't need to go searching for it. Might as well post what I have
here as well.

I haven't looked into changing the isosurfaces really. It might be possible to
animate though.
There seems to be a problem with them, perpendicular lines to the shoreline, so
I was going to start dissecting it anyway.
The scene file(s) have been reposted to the p.t.s-f. group, subject Return of
the Beach, Kevin Wampler.

Nice work Bob, I don't remember the original. Something
hottible seems to have happened to this, either jpg or
lack of aa or something. Is that angle dependant
relfection?
Keep going with it, it's going to be real good.

I really like this one too but for different reasons. The
sand looks so good. I've seen beaches where the sea and sand
has this combination of colours.

I'm just playing with the original scene file from Kevin Wampler. Smaller
renders looked much better but there was always what seemed to me to be too much
specular highlight on the sea surface on the right side mostly.
It does have angle dependant reflection. There's noticeable lines going from
shoreline out to sea at this resolution too and I don't have a clue why yet.
And I may have compressed the Jpg a bit much.
See the source at povray.text.scene-files titled Return of the Beach, Kevin
Wampler.

Woah, cool!! I had thought that this scene was long forgotten, but I'm very glad
to see that people are getting some use out of it still. Also, thank you for
reposting it to p.t.s-f. I like the image, and think that it does a better job of
presenting the technique than mine did. However, as I'm sure you have realized,
the textures still need some work if you intend to make a scene out of it.

You're welcome and thanks. Was wondering if I had seen you around in the recent
past or not.
When I found the original scene source again I was surprised that you yourself
were the one and only replier there. When I gathered it up from the p.t.s-f.
group the first time I just stored it into my c:\povpath\scenes folder and
hadn't tried using it until now.
At least a few more people are going to see it now, and it was always a good
image because I believe the original p.b.i. posting of it had several replies.
Not all that long ago actually, only a half year.

Yeah, I am now living on campus and the computer I ordered hasn't arrived yet (it
should pretty soon though), so I am only able to skim through the newsgroups once
to twice a week.

I should have given a better explanation, looking out to sea there is what
looks to be a path (could be the way the sun is shining), this isn't the
problem though, the problem is what looks like brown pixelation on the sea
to the left and right of this central path, it looks real messy, I'll try
a render at my end and see what comes out.

I think it's isosurface trouble causing that. Ever see the talk about the black
pixel problem with these sort of things? max_gradient I believe. I think it
might be related to that in part coupled with the refraction, but I'm not sure.
I haven't changed anything and rendered again yet. Basically it could be just
the odd lines perpendicular to the shoreline (pointing out to sea) and surface
unevenness to blame mostly.

Well, just 2 things:
- It's a part of a project I'm working on, and your comments make me
think I'm in the right direction. Thanks to all of you.
- The sand texture is actually *almost* simplistic. It looks good
because it's applied to an isosurface (simply a plane with different
levels of noise3d...)

I've done a render and it looks exactly the same, so it wasn't jpg. I don't
know enough about isosurfaces to mess with it really, I'll need to start with
a much simpler example I think.
