A portrait of Cindy Crawford mapped onto a sphere using a similar technique
to Gilles's text mapped to sphere.

This looks nothing like her, but I have to admit that it's very very cool. I
would use a different photo with more space around the facial features, and one
closer to a 3 by1 aspect ratio to remove the distortion, as it stands now you
have something very alien. Map it to a cylinder to make the Maoi(?) of Easter
Island

Hey Guys, don't take me seriously - just a bit of fun!!!
On a more serious note, anyone got any bright ideas how to map the face to
the front only of the sphere... someone suggested that I could add more
space to the image map but how could I map to only half the sphere?

That's how it's done. Double the canvas size horizontally and you're
there. And smoothen the edges between the image and the background
because they make rendering slooow.

Check out the solution provided for double sided coins at
http://www.spiritone.com/~english/cyclopedia where a little modification might
be in order. I also have no idea how well that would work with the superpatch
