Why don't you really make it a portal? Has the portal pigment patch
made it into MegaPOV yet? If so, it's worth checking out.

I think tricky is the operative word here.
Comments?
Move the water 'HF' back in the z plane.
Change the arches colour to brown or even black, now!

NTL (NoneTheLess) an image to get lost in.

Because those portals won't transmit light, as I understand it.  That
is, a light on one side of the portal won't illuminate the other side.

Very nice.
*I* like the wave in the center. I think it adds drama.
The 2 skies look too much alike to my taste.
The gate in itself is fantastic.
Too bad the sea reflects the same lighting/sky everywhere. But I know of
know way of solving this without image compositing. er... maybe with Megapov
light groups (nver tried this feature myself)?

Or perhaps projected_through, which was designed for just such an 
occasion.

You could try the vampire method, You could have a triangular copy of 
the sea behind the portal, and have that only reflect light from within
the portal and have the outer light shine on the outer sea.  

There are some good demonstrations of the vampire method in the scene files
groups.
