I think it must be the TGA Mosaic utility:
http://www.coe.uncc.edu/~adwoodfi/tga.html

The colors match up with the painting well it seems. If it isn't TGA
Mosaic-made then I don't know how it could've been done (isosurface? it's always
isosurfaces...).

Nope. You nailed it Bob.

Spider,

This is a Win app only with no source available at it's home page. You can
try contacting Andy Woodfin directly to see if he will share it with you.
You can mention my name, it might help. I was one of his beta testers.

I'm doing that as we speak. I realized that this is the kind of thing that is very
well suited to doing under Java. Since I've done lots of TGA conversions utilities in
the past, this should be quite easy. I'll see if he wants to collaborate. If he's too
busy or whatnot, I'll go ahead and do a Java version so that more people can enjoy
this sort of thing.

Since Pov can read tga's directly I wonder how difficult it would be to
patch this directly into Pov itself...

This can also be done with TGADOT. It's an older utility program
available from the povray server. It's written in C, and I've
personally re-compiled it myself for WIN95 command line use. I also
added a few enhancements while I was at it. I haven't asked the
original author about making my version public, but perhaps I should.
His version uses an older povray syntax that needs to be updated.

I had no trouble re-compiling this for WIN95, and I doubt that it
would be any problem for LINUX or most any other OS.

Unless you have made signifigant improvements TgaMosaic is a far
superior product. TGADOT had the terrible habit of conveting
each pixel of the image into an object which created extremely
large file sizes. TgaMosaic has options for averaging the pixels
to reduce object count plus it allows for different object types,
user definable rotations, a built in clock variable for animating
the image, plus other nifty inhancements. I'm not knocking TGADOT
mind you but without some serious work it's limitations make
TgaMosaic a much better choice for modern POV-Ray users.

You want to see bloat you should see the file sizes this type of
utility produces even with small images for the input file.

True, the original TGADOT doesn't have the ability to average pixels
to reduce object count, doesn't have the built-in clock variable, or
rotations, but the source code is readily available for anyone who
wants to port it or add enhancements. I was under the impression that
TgaMosaic wasn't availablie in source code. Am I mistaken?

It's a fine way to emulate a low resolution in a high resolution pic :)

I have done something very similar to this using my eval_pigment()
patch. Just call the eval_pigment() using the center location of each
sphere and a pigment which uses an image_map, and use the returned color
in a solid pigment for each sphere. The results would be the same as
this. Plus, you can use any pigment, not just an image_map, and every
file format POV supports is supported(not just TGA).
It also can use the interpolation built in to image_map...

And it isn't bloat, it is a useful feature which only took a small
amount of code to implement.(although I think it currently only returns
the rgb values, I haven't modified it to return f and t yet)

Probably. I really don't know, and the people in charge of MegaPOV might
want to wait until it works with filter and transmit. I will try to get
to work on that...

I am curious about this image. At first I thought
it was a dyslexic stereogram:)
I wonder why you mirrored Mona,
for aesthetic or technical reasons.

Thanks for pointing out the benefits of TgaMosaic. I've

The aspect of the "Mona" object was such that it was taller than it was
wide, leaving black space on each side of the image. To fill the screen
I decided to mirror the "Mona" object. I posted this mainly as a practical
joke in response to the image map thread in off-topic :)

I've got a basic version working in Java now, so you can use it on Linux.

Anyone interested?

I've started talking with Andy, but the basic stuff I just did was my own for
now. Mainly reading the Targa file. I'll probably have it support other input
formats also. I'll probably get a page going in the next few days.

Speaking of that clock variable, Ken, I'd like to see any animations that anyone might
have yielded with TGAMosaic. I have had some problems in the past with the tiny
tesserae disappearing from frame to frame when I create mpg's using CMPEG. If I make
full blown big avi's though, the effect is pretty fun, if I say so myself.

I really haven't played with it at all. It might be interesting to see what
happens to Mona in an animation. It I get anywhere with it I will let you
know.

Look for it very soon (i.e. the end of this week). I just need to add some
command-line parsing so you can feed it different paramerters.

I also told Andy I'd volunteer to be the maintainer if he wanted to GPL his
program. Since that discussion, he has, so we can all benefit from his work.
I'll probably have an intro page up later today.
