The scene is, of course, breathtaking. But the question remains: what
IS that stuff in the foreground? It is reminiscent of some kind of
ethnic cracker or bread.

We have some peaks in the UK where the tops are flat and covered in peat it
reminds me of that - muddy, torn by wind, rain and Frost into the most
amazing shapes and hell to walk over!!!
