Gail Shaw was right in the first place...it's proton, not photon
torpedo. It's mentioned in the scene where the rebels are briefed
before attacking the Deathstar in A New Hope. Also, although the
movie doesn't say, I'd guess that proton torpedoes are what's being
dropped on the asteroid in The Empire Strikes Back to fish out the
Millenium Falcon.

So it's: pRoton for Star Wars
and: pHoton for Star Trek

Aah the important things in life! ;-)

Within the scene it doesn't matter what they are called, but I think Lucas
envisioned Proton Torpedoes, which were supposed to have destroyed the Death
Star. Remember? Luke fired them down the ventilation shaft? heh

Yeah, somehow light isn't as scary as the thought of some proton getting me!

You may not respect a light bulb for it's meager photon energy but
I gaurantee you would have new found respect for the photons coming
out of a 5kw industrial laser cutting system if you got in front of
one :)

Just compare that to a small tad of proton star material. :) Even in a
starship, that's gotta hurt! heh

Arguably I would not wish to subject myself to either source of
life threatening material and you are right I would probably prefer
to take my chances with the laser. With my shiny bright disposition
the laser would probably just bounce off leaving me unharmed.

Well, I thought you might have some insight as to what a photon torpedo
actually is. I'm sure it is some form of nastiness beyond lasers, but I have
no idea in what form. :)
I imagine something like a water balloon, with a very high energy payload.
Why? I have no idea. :)

Rember one of the star treks where they buried spok in one, its like a big
flay cylinder / casket shape, just make a few, and a bright weid glow..

I assume you mean neutron star. No such thing as a proton star.
