The model will be available from the POV! site when it goes online, at 2
detail levels depending on how long you are prepared to wait for a render.
in both Moray and POV format.

there will also be a CD-ROM to go with the case, that can be easily textured
with your own images, oh and some books , and ermm, I will be doing a big
scene very soon, you'll see!

Very nice. And nice of you to offer it to the masses. All I have is a poor
example of a CD to go in it so yours will probably be better.

That lid looks great.
Do you really have a green CD jewel case?

My compliments on your modelling and texturing skills! Now put your
RadHat Linux 5.2 CDs in there, too! That CD picture was really as
realistic as real life is in reality, too. I didn't comment on it as I
am using Slackware on one HD and Debian on the other and have no third
HD to install RedHat...

Two things to think about... one is caustics. I think POV's faked
caustics will suit you fine for the lid edges shadow, but photons
might prove useful for reflection caustics, too. The other thing to
try is the angle dependent patch I read about a couple of weeks ago,
if, of course, it is already public.

All in all, I am in awe of your skills. Great job!

No!, I dont have a nice brightly coulored CD Case, but I tried to a nice
dark grey, but could not get the normal right, and to be honest it didn't
show up the detail how i liked, so i stuck with a couple of primiry textures
i have in my 'dev' texture library.

I have a few sitting right over there.
Green, yellow, red and blue. Came with a set of simple CD racks I got
last year.

I want to start by saying I'm not trying to start a fight, really I'm not,
but...

This looks to be one of those images that could really benefit from PNG.

If you don't re-post it as PNG, go ahead and please mail me a PNG version (I'd
love to see the detail).
(Also, since PNG uses the exact same compression as ZIP, in theory a PNG file
version should be just as small as a ZIPped BMP or TGA)

Yes but as I pointed out a couple of days ago, PNG images are displayed
differently depending on what software is used, forget any ideas you had
about gamma correction with a PNG.

Personally I use a lossless raster format for storage, such as a BMP or TGA,
and do the compression myself.

True. At the moment, things are a bit of an issue. But the situation is
improving quite rapidly. Once you figure out how things are really working (i.e
which of your programs display PNG images correctly and which mangle them and
how), then one can start to get a lot better than with using BMP or TGA.

Although I have very realistic ideas about gamma correction with PNG (being a
programmer delving in the graphical realms for ten years now) that don't really
need to change. However, the warning is a very good one that should be put out
for all those who don't read the PNG specs and follow the developer mailing
lists.

To Sum up: BMP and TGA loose all Gamma information, and the end viewer has to
guess what was intended.
PNG stores the Gamma information, _BUT_ not all programs handle this correctly.
In addition, not every image author has his system setup correctly.

Suggestion: all those who are interested in viewing PNG images should test
their different software with the images at
http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/pngsuite.html
In had with the gamma file at http://www.povray.org/ , all of us can start to
get to see the artistic intent much better.

(BTW, Bad news: Netscape Navigator 4.51 does not handle the gamma correctly,
and just dumps the raw pixels as-is. (then again, that's the situation you have
with JPG, BMP, TGA, etc.)

That's probably fine, but you might be missing out on some minor benefit. A PNG
version of the you sent me was 12% smaller than the ZIPped BMP version (574K
instead of 655K).

Oh, and as far as the content of the PNG over the JPG... WOW. Huge difference,
and great image!

When the problems with PNG are sorted out i may start using them more, but
for the time being there are to many problems.

As to Gamma, its a nice idea for the file format to use it, but it may be
more of a hinderence for the time being, as many people dont every think
about it, let alown know how to make use of it.
