Since many people have wondered several times who this Mr Tyler was, and
asked whether he was real, or even whether he was a human being, here is
a quick answer : Ken Tyler is made up of pov primitives : triangles,
spheres, cylinders etc.
This is how he was created.
Happy birthday, Ken

Disclaimer : this is a work of imagination. People shouldn't assume that
you are bald, or suffer from a case of badly smoothed triangles. Or that
you are primitive.
Technical : it turns out that I have a kentyler directory... I had
worked briefly on an image inspired by a picture Ken had posted on
January 20th, but never finished it (got bored and ran out of ideas). I
dug it up, added several elements from previous pictures. No coding at
all but occasional translates and rotates. Poser and the Colefax/Warp
mesh compressor and deformer helped a lot.

Pfou !
That's an awesome picture, what modeller did you use for the face and the
small figure.
J'en reste le cul par terre ( I won't translate that one !)

Thanks, but it's just Metacreations' Poser. I usually don't use Poser figures
for close-up because of the strange angles (that you can see in the picture) and
other problems. For REAL good human modelling in povray, look at what Jaime
Vives Piqueres (and a few others) did with Spatch in some of his IRTC winners.

Awesome!
I was about to say that you forgot Ken's brain, but then I remembered
that it wouldn't be a mistake... ;)
Just kidding!
Well, the picture is very nice, except for the un-smoothness of Ken's
head.
The idea is great!

Hurmmfff !!! I need no simple organic processing module like you mere
humans do. When you connect to the internet, or any other form of
electronic on line service, you are connecting to my nueral network.
I am virtually based, both here and partialy in another dimension.
That dimention is not direcly accessable to you humans from your planet.
This explains why my problem solving powers seem to fluctuate from day
to day.
It takes a tremendous amount of personal metaphysical strength to
keep the dimensional gateway open to you as I have been doing for
months of your time now. I am nowhere, and everywhere at once. I am all
seeing yet blind to the drudgery of mortal exsistence. I am a God
amoung men but a simple child amoung women. I am what you want me
to be, but not when you want me to be. I am no more and no less that
the sum total of all my exsistance and will not be undersole at any
price. I don't think therefore I am not !
Beware ! Here Be Ken's ! and somes gots teeths!

Have you been overdosed with Robert Rankin and Douglas Adams, with a slight
touch of Terry Pratchett lately ??? It just seems like that...

Thank you for your thoughtfull and unsolicited gift. I had not
realized I had allowed my outer appearence to become so degraded
and have made a note to do something about that someday. One thing
missing that caught my eye immediatly was the lack of auxillary
life support equipment and supply tubing. I have to have several
dedicated machines hooked to me at all times to take care of the
lower system processes. This allows me to concentrate all of my
massive intellectual thought processes on more important and
demanding tasks. Raytracing et.al.

I have been called primitave names before and I am a big boy now so
my feeling won't be hurt if they do say it again. And for the record
my fully folliculated triangles are quite smooth enough - thank you very
much. >; ^)

A kentyler directory ?
Gee wiz! Where is mine !
Even Ken Tyler doesn't have a kentyler directory on his system.
After searching through the directory and coming to that date I am
still unsure which of the very rare newsgroup posting of mine you are
referring to. I am still finding it unlikely that anything I post
image wise here can be considered a source of inspiration to someone else.
It does appear that I was on a streak during that time frame and here is
a list of images related Posts I made within 6 days prior to that time:
on 1-14 posted image titled "Feelin Blue"
* Most likely candidate for the image you say you referenced due
to the inclusion of a humanoind shaped face in the image
on 1-16 posted image titled If You Can't Go to Heaven
* Second most likely candidate for the image you say you referenced
due also to the inclusion of a humanoind shaped face in the image
* This last was mainly a follow up to the previous blue faced image.
I was just showing off by this time.
The following two were closer to the date referenced but are in my opinion
short on artistic inspiration and long on sharing of technical advancements
in the raytracing industry.
on 1-16 requested help with candle problem
on 1-18 posted image titled Media Stuff
Regardless of the work in question I am honored that I have as least
had some small impact in the artistic side of your life and for a change
it was a good one at that.
Thank you for the tribute Gilles.

Get over it Ken... ;-)
Actually I REALLY liked this image (and your wonderful description Ken)...
it kind of reminded me of my Violent Society animation I did a few months
ago... featuring "Mr Wirro"!!! :)

The above address is for anyone vaguely interested in what I just said...
(oh, and it's not really a current project anymore... just that I haven't
had time to update that section yet)
Comments on those images would also be appreciated for anyone out there even
taking notice of me still...

Funny how things work... It's always difficult to track down sources of
inspiration, but here is the (almost ?) full list of credits !
- The original Ken Tyler picture was titled "Re:If you can't go to heaven" and
posted on Jan, 20 (21:48). It features a head which is part metal on the top,
something I found particularly appealing (I'm weird, OK).
- Having another look at Lance Birch's Mr Wirro makes me think that there is no
doubt that it made its way into the Ken creation picture, at least
inconsciously. I remember seeing it and telling myself for a couple of minutes
that I should definitely grow up and buy Max because these were really cool
pictures.
- Dominique Jacquel's Spatch tutorial page features a Millenium Falcon which is
half mesh too :
http://www.mech.ed.ac.uk/~dom/gfx/irtc_art_howto.html. The technique presented
is exactly the one I used (though the wireframe was obtained through Chris
Colefax's mesh macro and I never used Spatch).
- The first computer-generated pictures I ever saw were the ones in the movie
Tron (1982), and there was an animated (and rather crude) faceted "face" that
impressed me a lot and got me started in this 3D thing (though it took me
several years to actually start).
Now, inspiration also comes to me in lots of surprising shapes, including dust
bunnies.

From the "Dust bunnies FAQ" :
Q. What are dust bunnies?
A. Go look under the sofa and see for yourself.
More : http://www.dustbunnies.com/dustbin.htm
Dust bunnies can be modelled with blobs and media though no dust bunny has appeared
yet in this group.

Hey, I've got those!
<snoops around under bed>
Yep.
They're cute. But they didn't do a damn thing for me...
Wait... Dust bunnies... Interesting challenge, actually. Continuation may

I prefer the dust puppy. I has way more intellect and plays a mean game
of quake. Go for it at http://www.userfriendly.org/cartoons/archives/ .
And its way of creation may be pretty close to the things that made Ken
evolve :-)

That may very well be acknowladging the fact that your server must have
been running povray, while dust-puppies server was propably somewhere
doing apache and nsfd.

I admit that I have the strange feeling, both of you are not really from
this world. So perhaps what seems like a struggle with reality for us
humble flesh folks is just some kind of server-side-humor.
