he he he, I thought it might have been something like that (height fields
that is)... There is an incredible program in the "high end" market which
uses a similar technique... I can't remember what it's called, but it was
the same one used to make the waves in Titanic (the CGI scenes anyway, not
the real footage!!!  ;-)

I think it was something like $15000 (RIP OFF!!!)

Have you tried animating this yet?  If it's at all possible I'm sure the
results would look fantastic!

Also, maybe try using a noise based image modifier... like perlin noise...
could yeild interesting results... (not sure if it'd make good waves though,
but worth a try).
